Whose lips had sipped from these champagne coupes from the Mapes estate in Reno?
October 2017. Friends Deb Geraghty and James Stavena surprised Bill and me with these champagne coupes they found at a Reno antiques shop. For Reno history buffs, it was an exciting find. The vintage coupes were from the Mapes estate.
A few days later, I broke with cocktail tradition and served Manhattans in the champagne coupes. Bill talked about being at the Mapes Hotel on opening night, December 17, 1947, and we speculated on whose lips had sipped from these beautiful coupes over the years… Marilyn Monroe, Arthur Miller, Clark Gable, Johnny Weissmuller, the list of possibles went on and on. We didn’t know it would be our last cocktail hour together.
P.S. The brass horses were also a gift from Deb and James. Bill and I named the horses (from left) Zorro, Little Joe, and Half Pint, for the horses on the Flying M E. I’m certain my horse would’ve been Half Pint.
