The Thanksgiving When No One Showed Up

Thanksgiving, 1985. For our first Thanksgiving in our new home in Incline Village, Nevada, Bill and I invited his ski cabin group to join us… a dozen San Francisco friends who’d been sharing a ski lease at Lake Tahoe for thirteen winters since 1972. Thanksgiving morning, Bill and I woke up to three feet of fresh snow on the ground. It continued to snow heavily throughtout the day and and Highway 80 was closed on and off. The telephone started to ring and one by one our Bay Area guests had to cancel. This left Bill and me with more food than we could ever eat. Bill called the local church and offered to deliver, but they turned us down politely saying something about sanitation laws. I don’t remember what we did with the food, but as a Southern California Valley Girl who’d never seen much snow, I do remember spending a cozy day at home with my hubby in front of a roaring fire, with Bloody Marys, and watching a greeting card snowfall.

Happy Thanksgiving Day, friends!

  1. The pictures look magical. Sure the memory is too.

Just goes to show, the memories are as important as food. Our TGD meal for this year evolved from chicken enchiladas, to Alaskan King Crab legs. In our book, either meal is a delightful and welcome change from turkey & dressing!

  2. Snow is beautiful, especially if you can stay inside and not drive. Thank you for sharing.
