Bikini Atoll, 27 June 1946 – Four days to go to the big day, code-named Test Able, when a 23 kiloton atomic bomb would be dropped from the air on a fleet of target ships in the Bikini Lagoon. To pass the time and ease the tension, liberty was granted to go ashore for a warm 5-cent beer and a swim in the Bikini Lagoon. After all these years, I still have an unused chit for two warm beers.
